I have recently gone through the experience of installing 7.1 on a Duo230.
I indeed have a good copy of 7.1 which came with my Duo, but I would
strongly advise installing 7.6 or perhaps 7.5.5.

My theory was that the lighter 7.1 would leave more RAM available and
generally run faster because it was designed to run on Duo230-level
hardware. I discovered that while it did use very little RAM, 7.1 was
slower and less stable than 7.6, to the point that I've wiped the Duo and
reinstalled 7.6. The newer OS benefits from years of bug-fixing and
refinement. It allows the use of OpenTransport which is a lot faster and
more reliable than MacTCP, Code Fragment Manager which allows the use of
Netscape 4.08, etc. Overall, 7.6 seems to run much smoother and crash much
less often.

System 7.5.3 is available on Apple's website for free, and so is the 7.5.5
update. After installing 7.5.5 or 7.6, upgrade OT to 1.1.2 (from Apple's
site) and CFM to 4.0.
