I think my situation is similar, in that I was given a 1 gig
Fujitsu HD formatted with FWB. Certain browser-hangs seem to unmount the
drive. I usually use InvisiFile to trash the Desktop DB, which usually
brings back the drive icon (this drive is in the Dock BTW), but it's still
good to run diagnostics for the errors.
As for the CD, I went from 8.1 back to 7.6.1 on my 280 mainly
because I could return to PopUp Folders and because of the "undocumented
features" of the Apple CD driver v. 5.3.1....which is that it will run any
CD drive, not just Apple's.
I always keep this one handy, as well as CD Sunrise, since between
those two, most of my (non-audio) drive recognition problems dissolved.
Can email them to you if you can't find them, but TomeViewer will
dig it out of the install CD's for you.
