Good advice, except I neglected to mention that I've been through 3
different operating system versions with this, with clean installs, and
even a complete HD reformat (vers 7.5.3, 7.6.1, now 8.1).  I have also
zapped the PRAM and reset the power manager, as another kind soul has
suggested.  Have worked extensively at reseating the keyboard cables,
although that seems so likely I'll probably give it one more go tomorrow.

Very confused......
