Yes it will work and its fairly easy to do.
If the bottom of the 2300 is in good shape then the simple way to do this
is to swap the screen from the 280c onto the bottom half of the 2300 case.
If the bottom plastics are smashed up, (your description of being
steamrolled) then it gets a little more complicated.
You will need to take both the motherboard and the metal chassis (this
frame stiffener acts as a heatsink for the processor)from the 2300 and move
them into the 280's case.
It's not that hard if you have the service manual
(get it here) <ftp://ftp.traffictrak.com/ServiceManuals/> and take your time.
The 2300 MOBO was designed to be used as an upgrade and therefore it
supports both SCSI & IDE hard drives as well as Color & Black&White screens!
