My personal experience:

- gently remove the keys, and place them so you can remember how to 
put them back on
- remove the top grey rubber mat
- gently clean the rubber mat with some mild soap and water, then air dry it
- remove the 2 mylar sheets, careful not to knock off the LED.
- each of the mylar sheets has some silver/grey/white traces on it
- gently wipe the traces with isopropyl alcohol, or if that doesnt 
work, rub _gently_ with a clean eraser
-this should clean off any dark or coppery sheen to them
-reassemble and test
