You might want to check out FWB CD-ROM ToolKit for updated drivers. But,
drivers don't help make a CD-ROM bootable, yoiu need a drive that supports
it. You best bet is to hit eBay and look for an Apple External CD-ROM
drive.

Most new CD-RW drive are bootable. If you get Toast (CD Burning software)
it comes with a driver so you can use your CD-R(W) drive like a normal CD
drive. It works great.

USB has only been good for one thing on my G4, hooking up an iMate 
USB->ADB adaptor :-) Stick with SCSI. You will have better luck.

As for MacOS 9.0.4, I've had problem if I just update 9.0.4 on a 9.0 box
that has been used in any way. Try doing a fresh install of 9.0 then
updating to 9.0.4.
