The ethernet hardware in the Dock II or Plus shipped with the unit, 
so it's supported by an Apple driver that's part of the OS 
distribution ("Apple Built-in Ethernet" or something like that - this 
is actually a lot of drivers for a lot of 68k Macs all bundled into 
one extension). The card you have in your Dock I is either 
third-party or a rebranded Apple card that requires an extra driver. 
The best way to find out who made the card, what model it is, and 
thus where you need to look for the driver, is to simply open the 
Dock and take it out for a peek. Hopefully whoever made it will still 
have a driver installer for it on their site, or someone on the list 
will have the same card.
