As for the hard disk, the 280c has only a SCSI bus, so it will accept
only SCSI drives, which are close to impossible to find in capacity over
500MB in the 2.5" size. Note that the similar PowerPC model, the 2300c,
comes with both a SCSI bus and an IDE (ATA) bus. They are even both
active at the same time.
To upgrade to PowerPC, you just need to get a 2300c motherboard and
you're supposed to just swap them. Yes, $145 is a bit steep, considering
I found a 2300c on eBay about a month ago for $177. However, it was not
in good shape and I had to spend a little bit more to get some parts.
Now, it's running great (thanks list!).
As to where to find those 2300c motherboard, I would say your best bet
is eBay. Be patient and wait for a 2300c that has a broken screen. It
should be cheaper.
