The cost for used SCSI Duo Hard Drives is rediculous!

To upgrade your 280 to PPC you would need the 2300 Motherboard and case
stiffener. You could then use a larger IDE hard drive with the appropriate
cable.

Feasible yes, cost effective...IMHO no.
By the time you have secured all of the parts you will have spent as much
money as if you had bought a 2300 to begin with and you dont have the
bigger screen that goes with it!
My advice is to look for a 2300 that has the max Ram installed (56) and if
you need a larger hard drive then go ahead and put one in. New IDE drives
in the 4-6gig range can be purchased for less than $100 and are easily
installed by anyone with a reasonable amount of manual dexterity.

(Having just assembled a 2300 from pieces I am speaking from experince!)
