It's often useful, in coming to grips with new words, to check up on just where they came from. In any case, it's usually interesting, and you and others (native speakers included) may find this so in the present case: "Jury-rig" is a nautical term, derived from an earlier term, "jury-mast," defined by the OED as "A temporary mast put up to replace one that has been broken or carried away." Its origin is not known; there is no evidence to support the suggestion that possibly it is short for "injury mast." It is not related to the legal term, which like so many others comes from Old French (the language of the court system brought to England following 1066 and all that) and which has to do with swearing an oath; cf. the word "perjury."
