Ok, there is a reason why this place is the frinedliest place on the
net--you can ask these questions and not worry about getting flamed!
What follows is advice (take mine, I ain't using it):
Keep the 8100 and ditch the 8500.
I have an 8500 that I wanted to upgrade and upgrade forever. However, two
issues decided it for me:
1) the price of RAM for the thing is astoundingly high--look at prices for
fast page memory or EDO Dimms. OUCH!
2) It turns out some 8500's have sound problems originating somewhere in
the motherboards. I never realized why my ViaVoice acted so flaky, until I
put a Sonnet Tempo IDE/ATA PCI controller into the 8500. I started having
bad sound problems and flaky QuickTime play backs. Others had the same
problems (see www.xlr8yourmac.com 's website for product reviews).
The upshot is, I went out and got a good deal on a Umax SuperMac S900 and
the 8500 sits on a shelf. The 8100 is terminal (i.e., won't run OS X), but
there is no guarentee that the 8500, upgraded and all will, either. If you
already have 120megs of RAM and a G3 in the 8100, then look carefully at
how much you spend to upgrade the 8500 (and realize a new iMac is $799).
