If the System is damaged you should still get the question mark. Did you try to reset the Power Manager holding down the power button on the back for a specific length of time (I'm afraid I don't recall the procedure/duration for a 2400)? Will it boot from a System CD? Note: The correct key combo to force restart is: Hold down Control; Command (Apple key); then hit Power. I am responding to the list because you might otherwise get a bunch of redundant responses. Also, others on the list will be able to pick up where someone else left off.
