Can't help you with the pads, but your display problem MAY be related
to the VRAM being fritzy. Have managed to fix a similar situation
permanently this by testing the VRAM with Tech Tool pro. Maybe there
is an easier way to reset the VRAM? Possibly by pulling all power and
resetting PRAM/removing PRAM battery?
