I was thrilled when TechTool came out. I bought version 1.0 in a promo
bundle with something else (can't remember what) but I remember thinking the
TechTool was the best part of the purchase.

I was also thrilled when Norton came along and I started using it in '91 I
think. I have every upgrade and wouldn't give it up. After I got it I never
had to call on the dealer again to fix a Mac. Version 4 did get a little
long in the tooth but it has just about always come through for me.

I have had only one incident where I lost the content of a drive when using
Norton but it was due to a very obscure combination. I had a 10gig
Micropolis hard drive that had been initialize/formatted with CharisMac I
believe (can't remember the version it's been about 4 years). Something
about this combination caused Norton to keep writing a directory that became
so huge it would render the drive unrecoverable when it crapped out.

Thankfully I always backup.

In all the years I've been working with the Mac, doing consulting part time,
and maintaining the systems at two ad agencies (while doing my full time job
as an Art Director, God Macs are so easy to take care of!) I've not had nor
heard of anyone loosing a drive to Norton. But hey, I live in the corn belt
here in Indy ;^)

I've heard Disk Warrior is really good but haven't had the need yet to get
it.
