Thanks for this lead - I tried this - turned off all extensions and control
panels except for file exchange as recommended by apple and rebuilt with
techtool. No dice - with extensions on the icons will still not show. I have
a corrupt extension that is spoiling the mapping of custom icons to their
applications and files. I will hunt it down and replace it.
