I have used the the dock with the same config you have in this situation 
and with the latest control panel installed, it recognized it immediately 
in the Appletalk CP, so if yours is not seeing it, then the unit 'could 
be' defective.  As we all know, could just be something wacky.  Make sure 
you reset the PRAM with the dock connectd, to see if that helps.
