As a computer hardware service tech, so I think I know what I'm talking
about, I'd say the LCD panel itself. This is born out by the fact that when
you installed one from a 540, it worked prefectly. Some LCD panels have
separate drivers for the top half and bottom half of the panel. If one of
the drivers goes out, you lose half of the screen. These drivers are part of
the panel not external to the panel.
Also, the inverter board just drives the screen. If it were REALLY dim (so
dim you could barely see any video displayed on the LCD) it would be the
inverter board. I've seen inverter boards go out...

Help:
I have tried to get an answer to a problem that I am having with an
newly acquired PB 520 laptop. I have tried the group that is specific
to Powerbooks with no sucess, so I am turning to you guys (and gals) who
have helped me many times with my Duo 280c and Duo 230. The powerbook
in question was meant to be a parts machine, however, I decided to see
if I could undo the major tampering that had been visited upon it by
someone. I was able to restore the unit to full operation, with one
exception....the grayscale LCD screen. The screen is perfect from the
top of the screen to the middle, but from the middle to the bottom it
looks like there are verticle white lines about 10 pixels apart going
all the way to the bottom of the screen. This makes icons look like
they have been cut apart. I disassembled the screen completely,
straightened some bent pins, and reassembled it....no change. My
question is is this the invertor board or the screen itself. I can get
a replacement screen for about 20.00 on eBay, but the invertor board is
another question. I swapped the screen on my PB 540c on to the 520 and
the color screen works perfectly. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Robert Newman
