The two biggest hassels with installing a hard drive in a DuoDock (50 pin
SCSI by the way, I haven't looked lately, but I don't recall there being a
lot of room for a 68pin to 50pin converter in there) is the mounting tray
and the cableing. Of course, if you get the fitting kit, everything that
I'm about to say it pointless, but what the hey!
Instead of doing it the easy way and getting the kit, I bought an LCII.
This solves the two biggest problems with installing a hard drive in the
dock -- the tray and the power cable.
The LCII uses the same mounting tray as the DuoDock. It takes a standard
half height SCSI drive. A SCSI cable can be bought, but it has to be
kind of longish: I got one of those longer cables with multiple connectors,
and cut off the extra. The really tricky one was the power cable: it uses
a 2x2 on the mainboard end, and a 1x4 on the drive end. The LCII uses the
same connectors, although the cable is much too short. 10 minutes with a
soldering iron fixed that.
Cracking open the case can also be tricky if you haven't done it before.
Download the Duo Users Manual from Apple (sorry, I don't have the URL) as
it has complete instructions on how to get into the case. You'll need it
anyhow to install the Ethernet card.
As an aside on the Ethernet card, you only need a transciever if the card
needs it. It seems that most of the Apple cards needed a funky transciever,
but some third party cards might not. I have an Apple ethernet card, but
haven't installed it in the Dock -- my Dock II has eithernet built in, so
it's a tad redundant...
Hope this is somehow useful
