I've had a Newer G3/240/512kb die from (partially) heat related causes (in
August, when temps could run 168-170F on the G3 CPU). Fortunately, Newer
replaced this under warranty before they went bust. Ambient temperature, air
circulation and the type of surface the 2400 is placed on are important
determinants in heat transfer efficiency. I've added an aluminum block to
connect the CPU directly to the aluminum pad of the lower case housing the
convection tube. I think this works better than a thermal pad or grease. Try
to be sensible in keeping the 2400 cool--but I refuse to defeat portability
and convenience with cooling pads and other paraphernalia.
I've had an Interware G3/320/1mb die, but very unlikely due to heat causes.
The copper based 320 and 400mhz run 10-20 deg cooler than the Newer G3/240
aluminum. I'm quietly looking for a way to get this expensive item repaired.
Actually I need to get a second 320 (not belonging to me) repaired as well.
Ideas welcome!
