Dear Listers: A problem has recently developed with the display backlighting on my 2400c. The right side of my display is significantly darker than the left side. The screen is brightest in the lower left corner. Beginning about one half inch from the lower left corner the light flares up and out at a 45 degree angle. The flare is still noticeable just before the screen turns black when dimming the display using the brightness control. The problem is worse when the book is cold and is wakened from sleep. The temperature in the room where I keep my 2400c at night is between 50 F and 55 F. When I wake it from sleep in the morning the flare is very noticeable and it is quite difficult to read the screen. The brightness improves once the book reaches about 118 F. However, when sunlight enters the room the screen impossible to read. I first began to notice the problem one morning about a month ago. After about an hour the backlight seemed to return to normal. Even now the brightness seems to increase significantly once the book reaches 118 F. However, the screen is definitely darker than it used to be; particularly the right side of the screen. I have re-calibrated the screen color using the sound monitor control panel numerous times. The screen is now most readable when set to 1.0 linear gamma and no white point correction. In the Service Manual display exploded view I see what appears to be 2 fluorescent lamps; one running up each side of the screen. There are, however, no part numbers listed for the fluorescent lamps. I also see an inverter board with part number 922-2980. 1. Does it appear from the above description that the fluorescent lamp on the right of the screen has burned out? Or could it be an inverter board problem? 2. Does anyone have a part number for the fluorescent lamps in the 2400c display? Better yet has anyone been able to located a replacement lamp? If so who makes it, what is the replacement number, and where did you find it? 3. Finally, can you recommend a company that can repair the display backlight. Other than the backlighting the display is in perfect condition-no bad pixels. I'm not interested in a screen exchange. I am also very uneasy about damaging the screen should I attempt the repair myself. I do fine working on desktops, but my 2400c is another issue. My 2400c is my primary computer. I use it at work, home and when I travel. I love the machine. The backlighting, however, has become a real problem. It is beoming increasingly difficult to see what I am doing. A 15 inch Titanium is not for me and I do not hold out much hope for Apple producing a new subPowerbook. My 2400c has an Interware 320 processor, a 12Mb drive, and is cardbus enabled. The work was all done by MCE last spring. The drive is partitioned with one partition running 8.6 and the other 9.04. The backlight problems is the same on both systems.
