You need the following:
1: a user account on computer 1 for computer 2
2: a sharable HD on computer 1
3: an existing network connection - this, as per the above, you already have.
4: establishing the HD to HD connection.
For #1:
You need to go to the File Sharing CP in computer 1 and assign a user account to
computer 2. Once the FSCP is open on computer 1, click on the Users & Groups tab then
create a "New User" The Name of the new user should be the name assigned to computer
2. There is no need to assign a password if only you will havce access to the 2
machines. I you don't know what the name of computer 2 is, open the FSCP on computer
2, go to Users & Groups and look under "owner". Close the FSCP when done.
For #2:
Go to the Desktop on computer 1, click on your HD icon to hilite it then go to
File/GetInfo/Sharing. Mark "Share this item and contents". Under the User/Group popup
menu you should see the user account already crated for computer 2. Select it then
set the "Privilege" to "read and write". Alternatively, yoou can set "everyone" to
"read and write" - this is recommended only if you have access to the machines. Close
the Get Info wondow when done.
For #4:
Go back to computer 2 and open the Chooser. Click on the AppleShare icon. If the
network connection is already established you will see the name of computer 1 in the
left side of the window. Click on the name so it is highlighted then click OK. You
will get a login window tatm says "Connect to the file server [computer 1]. type in
the password if you have one then click connect. The Networked-HD icon of computer 1
will appear on the Desktop of computer 2, and you can use if from that time on as any
other drive
Misc:
It does not matter which computer is which and you can even set this up mutually for
the 2 computers.
The IR connection is SLOW. If you want to copy a lot of data it may take hours.
To disconnect, drag the networked-HD icon of computer 1 into the trash on computer 2.
Once you successfully connected from computer 2 to computer 1, you can reconnect by
repeatiing #4.
Even better, go to the "Recent Servers" item under the Apple Menu and select [computer
1]
I hope it is not too confusing.
