The easiest way to hook up two PowerBooks via IR is to use Apple IR File
Exchange (email me if you don't have it). On each PowerBook, all you'll have
to do is choose the IRtalk protocol in the Infrared control panel, turn on
AppleTalk, and run IR File Exchange while both IR windows are within line of
sight of each other. Both computers show a window with any other computers
in range, and you can drag and drop files onto the folders shown in the
window. It's not lightning fast, but not bad at all.
