Alan, changing the trackball is easy.  I think it likely that all you 
need to do is take it apart and clean the little wheels.

You can probably find one on Ebay alone for $10-15, or just buy a 
junk Duo 21 or 230.  All the trackballs are the same.

Are you familliar with the method for taking Duos apart ?
