There was reference on AppleLinks today about a tutorial by Adam Rober
Guha about "Getting on the Net with an Older Mac." Given the recent
discussions on the list some of you may find it interesting and helpful.

Getting Older Macs Online
Low End Mac's Adam Robert Guha has posted a handy tutorial on "Getting on
the Net with an Older Mac."

Adam says it annoys him that ISPs are raising the requirements for their
software to, say, PowerPC with 32 MB of RAM, when the Internet has no
such requirements.
Adam suggests that the minimum practical hardware is really a 16 MHz
68020 processor (Macintosh II or LC or better), at least 4 MB of RAM ,
and at least 10 MB of hard disk space.
Other stuff needed includes a 14.4 kbps or higher modem. More than 33.6
is overkill on a 68k Mac. You will also need System 7 or higher.

For my own 25 MHz, 68030 LC 520, I use a US Robotics 28.8 kbps modem, and
System 7.5.5 with the Open Transport software from Mac OS 7.6.1. This
works well, and for some reason the old LC with this setup is a faster
email machine than even my G3 PowerBook with its 56k modem, at least on
our poky rural dialup connection.

Adam's tutorial walks you through the steps for getting online
successfully with a legacy Mac. You can read it here:
