I, too, have an E-Machines Etherdock. It is a minidock (E-Machines made
the minidock for Apple) with an RJ-45 ethernet port instead of a modem
pass-through and some advanced video options (That I don't think work with
modern monitors....). Anyway, I use it with my 2300 and it works with the
Apple drivers. However, I have the following observations on using
this dock with the 2300.
1.) It works great for surfing the web, FTP **downloads** and checking
e-mail. I am running OS 8.6, ICab, and Eudora Pro 3.1.
2.) It doesn't work well for file transfers via appletalk. IIRC, neither
copies from the server nor to the server worked well. I have printed with
it using my Duo 230, but I have not tried printing via AppleTalk on the
2300.
3.) Any TCP/IP traffic that sent a large amount of data over the network
crashed the machine. FTP Uploads or if you are running a FTP server or web
server (I'm guessing here) are about the only times you would run into
this.
Other than that, it works well. If you want to use the etherdock for
Appletalk, then don't. I recommend an Ultradock and/or a Ethernet
Microdock, as both seem to work flawlessly from what I hear. If you want
to use the Etherdock for managing web pages, which involves uploading a
lot of info via FTP, don't, as it will crash the machine when you try. If
you want to surf the web, read and send e-mail, news, and download files
(OS 8.1 update, for example), then the Etherdock works like a charm, and
you should be happy with it.

PS: I plan on checking to see if maybe the AppleTalk crashes were due to
the Mac sending Apple talk over IP instead of over Appletalk. Sounds
stupid, but that could have caused it. I also plan on trying to use
Appletalk over IP (iTools, Win2k services fr MAC, etc...) to see if you
can then use appletalk downstream kind of like web, FTP, etc. without
problems.
