I had the same conundrum several months ago except that Sprint was not
an option in my area. I ended up with Qwest Deluxe DSL for $30 month
plus my ISP at just under $20. The Qwest *Basic* DSL service at $20 is
not an "always-on" service. As a 2400 owner, you'd need to go with the
Cisco 675 external router that Qwest provides and an Ethernet PC card.
The Qwest-Cisco software and hardware installation are pretty
straightforward.
However, I am still diagnosing some weird interaction between my
Macsense ethernet 10-100 16 bit PC card (from Dr. Bott) and my (non MCE
Cardbus -enabled) 2400. Specifically, the Macsense PC card causes my
system to periodically freeze (stall?) for about 20 seconds or so at
random intervals. This occurs *whenever* the PC card is actually
inserted into the PC slot regardless of whether I am online (DSL or
dialup) or running other programs. When connected to the DSL Cisco 675
external router, I notice lots of "light-blinking" activity on the
WAN-LAN indicators during these freezes (stalls?). If I wait it out, all
becomes well again until the next occurrence. My 2400 (running 8.6) was
rock-solid before this.
Does anyone have any suggestions to resolve this? The Macsense drivers
are current and reinstalled. Is it a bad PC card? I tried paring to just
Apple extensions with no change in behavior. I found one anecdotal
report on MacFixit regarding the Cisco 675 external router that suggests
upgrading to 9.1 eliminated this issue. Kevin Yuhas at MCE thought it
might be some auto-sensing Ethernet 10 vs. 100 issue. Are there any
ethernet 10 only PC cards available that are 2400 friendly?
