Dear listers:

Last March Andrew, elbrio@aolcom, shared with the list the problems he
had with FedEx, which lost his 2400c Powerbook while shipping it to DT
&T. I have just had a very similar experience.

A month ago I described on the list the problems I have been having with
the display backlighting on my 2400c. Everything I tried has failed to
make a difference. The problem has continuted to get worse. During the
past several weeks I could only use the 2400c with an external monitor.
After several email conversations with Kevin at MCE, who installed my
Interware 320 and hard drive and enabled the cardbus, I dediced to
following his recommendation and ship it to DT &T.

After completing my current project and backing up key data, I took the
2400c to the FedEx office for shipping to DT&T last Saturday. I chose 2
day shipping since it was the weekend. I followed the tracking # on the
FedEx which showed that it was delivered Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Yesterday, I called DT &T to confirm delivery and to inquire about the
problem. They told me they had not received the 2400c. I gave them the
tracking # and upon looking at the tracking they said "it was delivered
somewhere a very long way from their shop."

I then called Fedex and described the problem. I was first told that it
was not their problem since they had delivered it. When I told them it
was to the wrong address they said that was not their responsibility.
After many go rounds I reached a supervisor. I was then put on hold for
over one half hour. When he returned he said he didn't know how it
happened but they had missed the drop off by several hundred miles. He
said they would try to locate it and gave me a control number. I asked
when it would be delivered to DT & T he said he didn't know. He said
they would have to find and retrieve it first.

Fortuniately, I thought, I had taken out insurance on the 2400c. When I
asked the supervisor about that he said that it could take up to six
months to collect provided they could not located the 2400c, but that I
would have to prove that the Powerbook 2400c was really in the package.
I told him that the Fedex agent had put it into their box. He said that
that did not represent documentation. I asked what would represent
documentation? He said he didn't know. That was a legal issue.

I asked him about follow up. He said don't call us, we'll call you. He
said if you call us you won't be able to find out anything because the
package is no longer tracked since it was delivered. Locating lost
shipments is an entirely different process.

I have followed up with DT&T alerting them about the FedEx problem and
asked them check, should they receive the box, to see if it had been
opened and that my 2400c was in it. I provided them with the seriel
number.

I'll keep you posted. Last Fall I had problems with FedEx shipping legal
documents. That was not a good experience. They denied all
responsibility. I'm beginning to think this is their mode of operation.

Just think the FedEx folks are taking over the package shipping for the
US Postal Service.

I'll keep you updated.

Stan
