Argh!
I've done real well with the keyboard cleaning, syst installation, even with
the modem software refresh, thanks to the acute minds in this list.
But I still haven't managed to get this old Duo 230 online.
Basically what happens is that the modem doesn't "hear" the phone line. When
I set it to blind call, it dials fine, in the fax software it gives out the
typical fax beep, waiting to connect, while FreePPP recognises the modem (it
says so) then dials (only if set to 'tone'; when set to 'pulse' it doesn't
seem to do anything) and waits. If I set it (in the Express Modem Control
Panel) to check for a dial tone, both applications say "no dial tone was
detected" - but I know my phone line is working. How to fix this hearing
problem?
I've got:
- sys 7.5.5
- MacTCP 2.0.6 configured (according to my local (Italian) ISP's precise
instructions)
- FreePPP 2.6.2 configured (again according to precise local instructions)
- Apple Telecom 2.3.3 + Apple Telecom 3.1.3 update (= express modem
software)
I tried to install Open Transport, cause I'd prefer to use TCP/IP or Open
Transport PPP, but I'm getting pretty confused: I can't figure out the
complex architecture of the whole Apple Talk/Open
Transport/PPP/CommunicationToolbox/TCP/IP/Apple Telecom thing, so although I
know I've got various pieces, I can't figure out what's keeping which piece
from working with which others. (For example: There's an "Apple Telecom
Modem" (Telecom v2.3.3) extension in the extensions folder, but it doesn't
show in the extensions manager (there's also a "GeoPort/Express Modem"
(Telecom T-3.1) extension); there's an "EM Extension" I'm not in the clear
about; I have a TCP/IP prefs file, but when I try to open it, it says I
don't have the TCP/IP application; I have various Open Transport libraries,
but I can't find an Open Transport application - and the various Open Tpt
softwares I've found for download require it to already be present with the
system (???).)
Could there just be a problem with the phone jack adapter ("Apple Express
Modem DAA", part# D826-1556A D)? Is there a way to check that? Could it all
be down to a language conflict (the Duo is originally German, as is the
modem installed, whereas I've installed the English International system
7.5.3, the Multicountry system 7.5.5 upgrade, the North American Apple
Telecom 2.3.3 with the Italian 3.1.3 upgrade...)
My patience is wearing a little threadbare....
Soothing words and brilliant ideas are very welcome.
Thanx.
Philip
