Philip,
in my experience "no dial tone" indicates a hardware problem -most likely
a pin-out problem. Your "German" 230 needs the DAA adapter you mentioned,
an expensive little gadget invented to comply with different national
telecom standards (here with those of the late Bundespost) and to make
Apple a little extra money. Plugging your (italian) cable into this
device will not ipso facto connect you to the phone net. Have you ever
successfully sent a fax? If not, you may need the appropriate phone jack
adapter to switch pin-outs (or slice open the cable and start switching
wires manually).
As to the software - I don't know about geoport, but FreePPP and TCP/IP
(part of Open Transport) should be sufficient to connect you to the
Internet when set up correctly.
Just my 2p
Greetings from Berlin
Edgar
