This is completely standard, though port 25 isn't blocked in any way (you can't generally filter SMTP ports usefully, because you don't know from where valid incoming mail will originate). The SMTP server, in this case Unix sendmail, just doesn't allow mail to be sent if it (a) originates outside, and (b) is also destined outside - ie. it's being relayed. This doesn't speak to any of the SMTP authentication methods at all, and in fact is the exact problem they're all intended to work around. Offhand it looks like earthlink has a separate server cluster under the name "smtp.earthlink.net" that's intended for outgoing, possibly relayed mail. These servers may support some form of SMTP auth, though you'd have to find out from them how to configure it for your client. I looked briefly and didn't see support for either of the common methods (AUTH or STARTTLS), however (Eudora 4+ supports SMTP AUTH). [someone wrote about Earthlink recently turning off XTND XMIT] Beats me why they'd turn off POP XTND XMIT if they had it before - it shouldn't really be any harder for them to provide it under this incoming/outgoing split SMTP scheme, unless their POP and SMTP servers were on different networks (which they're not - in fact they're on the same cluster of Unix servers). Are you sure they didn't instead stop using the klugey POP-authenticated-SMTP (also known as "SMTP-after-POP")? If they've really abandoned XTND XMIT, perhaps it's just because nasty old Outlook doesn't support it. If you're a customer of theirs and would benefit from having it available for Eudora, tell them so.
