I used OS 8 (and 8.1) successfully on my Duo 280c.  I would recommend that
you add more RAM, however, if you're going to do that.  Also, keep in mind
that it's going to use up more hard drive space than 7.6 does.  In other
words, if your HD is already packed, you will probably have to clear off a
LOT of stuff.

Unless you are using (or want to use) HFS+ format disks (especially the hard
disk), don't bother with OS 8.1.  As for Internet connectivity... I don't
believe that OS 8 is much different from 7.6.1.  I have built and been in
charge of a few Mac labs at the school where I teach, and I've connected ALL
of them to the Internet.  I've connected older Macs (030 Macs) using 7.6 and
newer models with 8.x, and found that the internet connection was just about
identical.

Now, if you'd been using any older versions of System 7, then I'd have
encouraged a move up to 7.6.
