Way, I have lots of mixed reactions to my Ricochet service, some day's it's perfect, some day's it's not. The people in my building think I'm an idiot as I wander from room to room checking my connection speed trying to find a reliable hot spot to stay in. But I digress. . .

I'm using 8.6 on my Newer upgraded 2400 and I strongly suspect that some of my conncection problems are related to our tenuous cardbus situation. I've had mine enabled, but there may be system software issues with the Ricochet USB connection as it will often crash after ejecting the USB card and the finder quits at the drop of a dime. There may be similar software issues with the compatability of your PC modem to the 2400's flavor of cardbus. This is one of the reasons this voice in my head is saying "buy a Ti-book and maybe it'll work better. . ."

I have the external modem, so can't comment on your buzzing sound. Mine's silent unless I'm near a radio.

Overall, my experience is similar to yours, I work in two locations and one is usually better than the other. I've also noticed that when the weather is cloudy, the signal seems weaker. I've also noticed that when the signal is weak even a 12 inch move of the modem or a 30 degree rotation will improve it tremendously.

One tip I might pass along is to use a connection speed site such as http://speedtest.mybc.com/ to calibrate your modem's antenna direction or the whole laptop location to get the fastest signal you can get.

Sorry if this is OT for most, but in spite of my criticism, it's a great service for anyone with a laptop. Hopefully when Metrocom, who offers the service stops losing money on it, the technical issues will clear up. . .

Way, feel free to contact me off list if you want to share tips, I'm interested to hear how much difference your speed is between the G3 and the 2400.
