How often do you rebuild the desktop...or run Norton (or others)?  When I 
start to get the symptoms you mention, I do just that and the problem goes 
away...until the next time, which is quite a while.  My guess is that it's a 
routine fragmentation/conflict thing and routine maintenance will handle it.
