Had the same X problem for 3 good 2400 batteries. DT&T first replaced a
fuse before the X returned in two months time. Then they replaced the
input-output board. It's only been two weeks, but all is fine so far.

Including a logic board replacement for a GLOD fix in January, I praying
this little baby hangs on till: (a) Apple comes out with a new subnotebook;
(b) I breakdown and go VAIO; or (c) I compromise and get a Ti whose form
factor is too large [size more than weight] for working on the run, whose
fragility would have you walk rather than run, and whose non-tippability
almost rules out moving from cheek-to-cheek while at work on your lap.

Just one of your frustrated 2400 owners.

to have (frustated because I just recently got it back from a repair).
After my powercord died on me (atcually probably shorted out from a wire
crimp) and I got a replacement after having the battery discharge on me, I
find that the battery icon has a red X over it and the powerbook only works
when plugged in to AC. When I plug in a known functional battery (and I
have a couple of almost-new batteries) the charge indicator located on the
control strip flash on for a brief second then show a picture of just a plug
again. The battery icon up on the toolbar stays "x"ed out.
