In case this information might be helpful--
2300c 56meg 3gig hard drive GV PortPort Modem
Mac OS 7.6.1 + SpeedDoubler for couple years, all quite stable.
(DuoDocks, NewerTech Ether & Color & UltraDocks all worked)

SpeedDouble helped a lot. Never tried RamDoubler. Always had VM on.
Very slow when modem active. To make dial-up web browsing acceptable, first used an
external modem (big help), then used WebShuttle from Addonics between the external
modem and the ethernet port. (WebShuttle is a modem sharing unit for about $120. I was
just using it to off load the PPP and route the io via the dock's ethernet.)

For battery operation, ran a stripped down 7.6.1 without SpeedDoubler (or anyother
avoidable extension). Battery life wasn't great, but I carried two.

Recently had to upgrade operating systems for Java. Jumped to 9.1 then worked my way
back. Here are some rough observations.

7.6.1 + SpeedDoubler -- fastest,
adding Appearance Manager made it feel slower,
but processing was probably the same
8.1 -- little slower feel, but processing still about the same
8.6 -- perhaps a little slower than 8.1
9.1 -- distinctly slower, both feel and processing

System memory usage went from about 10meg to about 15meg with extensions in place.

NewerTech Ethernet microdock would not work (not recognized) by any of the systems
beyond 7.6.1 (DuoDock ethernet works fine).

Systems beyond 7.6.1 would not allow full use of the serial port. They seem to allow
it only for AppleTalk or maybe a Image/StyleWriter. Couldn't puzzle it out quickly.

Global Village control panel / extensions did seem to work, even with 9.1, but I'm a
little suspicious 'cause the Finder shows the control panel icon in use after startup
even though it is not.

Final decision-- 8.6 for some software I need. Otherwise, I'd stick with 7.6.1

Thanks to a number of people who have been posting their 2300 & MacOS experience. And,
special thanks to Bruce Gordon, [EMAIL PROTECTED], who offered some very
useful advice off-list. (He recommends "8.6 for PPC's and 8.1 with 040's and 7.5.5 for
030's.")
