Your post was indeed a "top-post" - compare to the way this reply is
formatted (addressing the replied-to material paragraph by paragraph
or point by point). There isn't really a right way to format replies,
but this method is fairly well-established and used by most longtime
netizens (even if I may be personally biased toward it since I've
been doing things this way for about fifteen years, since I was
practically a tot ;). Some people actually prefer quoted material in
a block at the top or bottom, but most people who reply that way just
aren't really aware of how it looks to the reader or even how to do
more editing from within the mail software.

The main problem with your post is indeed the lack of snippage - you
didn't remove the extra portions (not written by you) that your mail
program helpfully included and which lend nothing to the reply, like
the quoted-back header and extra signature lines (the DuoList
advertising fodder... er, footer). Trimming replies and forwards
before sending them is in part just a question of learning to use the
mail software better (and in some cases, using better mail software -
I find Eudora 4 or 5 makes this stuff more obvious and easier to edit
in outgoing mail than Outlook does, for instance, which is one reason
I recommend it to newbies).
A VERY good way to get an idea of how your replies look is to change
your subscription to digest format for a while (you can always change
it back). Instructions for doing that are appended to the bottom of
every message by the list software, including this one. Try it, then
go on posting as you always have; it'll be an eye-opener.
Finally, resolving netiquette issues is never really off-topic. Hope
that helps.
Marc (who has both the pre and post WW2 versions of "Aryan" in his
veins, and thinks "Ms." would be a perfectly good word if honorifics
in general weren't a waste of good bandwidth ;).
