I had a Panasonic 8x SCSI CD-ROM that caused all kinds
of problems. I then switched to a Smart-and-Friendly
(RIP) burner that came with really good drivers. The
moral of the story is, drivers are everything. Try
going to the manufactures web page, and search for the
drivers. I know that this will take some time, but in
the end it will be worth it.
