Kate,

Installing the right driver for the CD-ROM drive might
solve your problem. 

Speaking from experience you may have however
encountered "SCSI voodoo" which may give strange
symptoms. When you connect the CD-ROM drive to the
2400, be sure that you turn on the CD-ROM drive first
before turning on the 2400. The other thing is to make
sure that the CD-ROM drive is terminated ie it has a
terminator (a rectangular plug)on the other SCSI port
of the drive (if it has an extra one).
