I've got a CD drive that is quite happy to be booted from directly as a
startup disk but otherwise used to refuse to be recognised during normal
operation. I found that the LaCie D2 extension allows it to be recognised
and used normally all the time.
I can send the extension if you think it might solve the problem - just
mail me back off list...
