thanks for the suggestion about VM, allie, will try that asap. as to your
question--it looks like only four phillips screws and the taped logo in
front are all that hold the two halves of the case together. i can see the
drive inside through the air vents on the bottom and it's definitely larger
than the 2.5-inch laptop "travelstars" i know of and use in my 2400c, but
it's very light, otherwise; i suspect IBM made special drives for these
(they also come in 10 gig sizes, and also 25 gig, i think).

well, yes and no. i've had problems as described, but since i made that
posting, i've actually been able to use the drive, hallelujah!--initializing
it with drive setup, and then (with the finder and redux both stalling at
some point during backups) using the file synchronization panel of 8.6
instead. it took a while, but it worked! i've even tested to see if it could
be used as a startup disk, and yes it could--it boots just fine. (for some
reason it only seems to work in the lower PC card slot, though.) i'm happy ,
now. there's lots of them for sale brand new on ebay--prices around $105-110
plus shipping. search for "travelstar external."

cheers
