I've just had my 2400c repaired by Apple and I want to share my
experiences, both good and bad.

First, the good. My battery was dead, so a brand-new battery was
included in the price of repair. That's a good deal; have you seen
the cost of a 2400c battery - if you can find it?

Next, the bad. I felt I was mislead by Apple as to the cost of the
repair. The cost of out-of-warranty repair is quoted as a flat
$369.00 fee on Apple's PowerBook repair page:

<http://www.info.apple.com/support/applecare_products/service/powerbook_service.shtml>

What Apple doesn't tell you on their web site, and didn't tell me on
the phone until they already had my credit card number to pay for the
repair, is that they charge and ADDITIONAL $49.00 just for the
privilege of making arrangements to have them repair your PB.

I complained to Apple customer service and received a call from an
Apple representative who told me that they consider a call to make
repair arrangements to be a troubleshooting call (AppleCare cost
$49), even if you know your machine needs to be repaired and you're
calling only to make repair arrangements.

How about that! Sure, Apple's free to charge whatever they want, but
it's misleading not to mention the extra charge on the web site or on
the phone until after they get your credit card # and make the charge!

By the way, besides the Green Light of Death problems others have
described, my PB would only run on the external power supply, with a
red X always covering the battery icon on the menu bar. The Apple
repair service said they replaced an I/O board as well as the battery.
