Brandy asked about G3 upgrades.
I've installed Sonnet, Newer, Powerlogix, and XLR8 in all kinds of desktop
macs,
and Sonnet and Newer in PB 1400s. I've had to return a Sonnet and an XLR8;
both were very good about taking them back. I understand that Sonnet is
writing new drivers to allow the Newer upgrades to work with OSX, but not
sure otherwise what kind of tech support you'll be able to get from an
extinct company.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of these, but I would offer one
caution. XLR8 makes a good product and has good tech support, but if
you aren't careful and buy a ZIF upgrade from OWC, you might find yourself
stuck with an untested/unwarranted G3 chip together with the XLR8 carrier
card. If you read the tech support pages on XLR8's website, you might see
that OWC had a reputation for selling junk chips that don't work, then
cashing in with a restocking fee when you return it.I was able to give enough
data to a friend stuck with one of these that he successfully talked his
way out
of paying the restocking fee when he returned his. He then bought a different
brand from another dealer that was faster and cheaper. If you think you want
a ZIF chip/carrier, make sure that whoever you buy it from sells you the same
brand G3 ZIF chip as the carrier so you'll have a warranty from the upgrade
manufacturer in case the dealer won't accept returns.
Other than that, any install should be a breeze and it will make it seem like
you have a new computer!
