GSM 2.5 a.k.a. GPRS is slated for rollout among USA and International GSM
providers soon, and is already available in parts of Canada. It boasts on
always-on connection and transfer rates of 28,800.

Your best shot is to get a GSM, Infrared-phone. These will work great with
any Apple PowerBook Wall Street or newer. With previous PowerBooks that do
have IrDA (2400,3400, Kanga), you are unable to use Ericsson and Motorola's
as they implement IrDA 1.1 and these models are forever stuck at IrDA 1.0
