It's usually not supported by the manufacturer, but I've connected my
cardbus upgraded 2400c with a MacAlly USB card to a whole lot of USB
devices: several Agfa SnapScan scanners, a Canon Powershot camera, a
USB cdrom... All perform flawlessly provided they have their own
power supply. The RATOC FireWire card works fine with VST FireWire
hd's and the MCE DataShuttle. I haven't tried any CD burners or
camcorders yet.
As for crashes I must be very lucky, I hardly ever have one and I've
yet to see a GLOD.
Still, I agree with the idea that if you don't own a whole lot of
legacy devices and apps and plan on using new peripherals exclusively
and switching to MacOS X soon, you'll be better served with a new
PowerBook or iBook. You won't have to carry around AC adapters all
the time, and there's no need to invest any money in CardBus
activation and a whole lot of PCMCIA cards. And a 2400c is still
worth *some* money. No, I'm not selling mine either...
