USB readers are overall a loss, but cameras with direct USB
connections are pretty comparable to a CF card PCMCIA adaptor in
terms of convenience. I currently have the use of a Canon Powershot
G-1 (wonderful camera btw) which I've used with an iMac (direct USB)
and my 2400 (CF card adaptor), and I'd call it six of one, half-dozen
of the other. If you have a camera that can't connect directly to USB
it might make a difference to you, otherwise I really wouldn't call
it a point for or against PC card slots. Another nice thing about
using USB directly is that you don't need seperate (and progressively
more expensive) adaptors for different cameras that use Smartmedia or
(shudder) Memory Sticks.
I expect as pixel resolution rises and movie modes improve, digital
still cameras will begin to include Firewire ports as well or instead
of USB.
