I have owned several NeXT workstations for years. All have been the
ADB models, so yes, I have 'tried' NeXT's black keyboards. =)
I am not a keyboard connoisseur. I bang away with two fingers mostly,
and do not really notice the 'feel' of keyboards too much. I have
never had a 'dominant' hand, so tend to prefer keyboards with an
equal distribution of keys since I don't automatically do things with
my right or left hand... and often make motions with the nearest of
the two.
That said, I do like the NeXT ADB keyboards however for their compact
size and mostly intelligent placement of keys. The 'command' key is
actually part of the frame, below the spacebar, and is very wide...
makes it reachable with either thumb. The CAPS LOCK (The world's most
useless key IMHO) is relegated to the lower left corner, and a wide
'control' key is placed on the left between 'tab' and 'shift' (which
is where the 'control' key belongs, *especially* in a UNIX
environment.
It has no Fkeys, no pageup/down keys, and a nice compact numeric
keypad on the right. It has a power-on, some sound volume and
brightness keys (which *sometimes* work on a mac) and a set of arrow
keys. The only significant annoyance I have found with it is the
placement of two big 'help' keys on either side of the spacebars
(where a Mac kbd puts the 'command' keys) hitting them while
connected to a Mac turns on Balloon help.
If you are in Seattle or the surrounding area, I'd be willing to loan
you one for a test drive.
