Don't see why Energy Saver couldn't work. As far as the modal boxes, there is a neat extension called "Okey Dokey" that will enter the return key to whatever default "OK" that pops up stopping your shutdown ( like a document that asks to be saved.) That being fixed, I'm curious what kind of background activity is it that could stop a scheduled Shutdown?
