Are you using a dock or a minidock? My experience with minidocks is that
the printer and modem ports on them are flaky, but I may have just had bad
luck with minidocks.

Upgrading was the right thing to do, although you might want to at least go
to (I think) 7.5.5. Personally, I run 7.6.1 on my 230 and 8.1 on my 280s
and that works out just fine. Some folks prefer 7.6.1 w/ selected 8.1
components (latest Open Transport, Appearance extension, etc.) to enable use
of some apps that claim they will only run under OS 8. Also, I assume
you've consulted the Epson web site for the appropriate driver.
