Some of us tried to convince Sonnet when they released the G3 upgrades for
the 1400. It might be worth trying again but I think Sonnet would need to
pre-sell at least 300-500 units to make any effort worthwhile. If I was in
charge of such a decision from Sonnet's viewpoint (instead of being a 2400
fanatic), it would be NO. Too much effort at too much risk for very little
bottom line gain plus warranty/service headaches and dealer sales
overhead--not to mention installation headaches.

Comparatively by today's standards, the 2400's anemic graphics & ram
capabilities, weak battery and constrained bus speed create some
bottlenecks. The CPU at 400 mhz is at a 10x multiplier. I don't think anyone
wants to push the bus multiplier further. The G4 is barely faster than the
G3 in non-Altivec functions where graphics, CAD and VPC emulation might best
benefit, together with a larger screen. Much as I'd like to see a G4 series,
the 2400 IMHonestO is probably pushed as far as it can go.

HOWEVER, if you want to do the legwork for collecting a pre-commitment list
for firm orders, I'd sign up. Otherwise I think it's a lost cause. Remember,
there were far more 1400s made (I'm guessing at least 10-20x as many)--it
was Apple's mainstream Powerbook for at least one full year. The far fewer
2400s made for a disproportionately higher upgrade card price. The $1399
upgrade price of the 400 mhz card could buy a complete desktop computer of
equal speed at its release. Maybe you can convince Sonnet to make a small
"unofficial" run...
