Hi all. Here's a problem I find quite baffling. Sorry it's a long post but
loaded with details.

I just picked up a Duo280c from a guy along with some other stuff. He said
sometimes it would boot if you pressed on the right side around the hinge
however it wouldn't for me. It has been setting for quite some time.

When I got home I tried to start it from AC and no battery. Nothing. So I
stuck it in my Duo Dock. I got the strangest startup tone. A strobing sound.
As if the startup tone were in slow motion and playing through a fan
(remember doing that as a kid, going aaaaaaaaaaaah into a fan ;^). Did the
usual stuff like reset power manager etc. I left it in the Dock over night
to charge the PRAM. Tried a good battery from my own 280c.

It will not boot and there is no light from the screen. Only the strobing
startup tone.

Anyway, I disassembled it and discovered that it has been upgraded with a
PPC2300 motherboard! I pulled the RAM (36MB!) and tried it. Still strobes. I
pulled the screen, modem, hard drive (SCSI) and after each I tried it. Still
strobed.

I then put the motherboard, by itself, into a different bottom and used
another chassis (frame, stiffener). I stuck it into the Dock and it booted
from an OS7.6 disk tools floppy!

However when I tried to launch drive setup, it locked up. I shut down with
the power button on the back. I then hit the power key and got that familiar
strobe. POOH!

Time to play hard ball!

I pulled the top off my Dock.
I plugged in the motherboard all by itself. It boots just fine.
I connect the RAM. It boots just fine.
I connect the SCSI hard drive. It boots just fine.
I launch drive setup and Simple Text. No problem.
I connect the modem card. It boots just fine.
Everything seems to function normally.

Then I put everything back into the bottom plastic with the chassis
(installing the screws to hold it together just as before), insert it into
the Duo Dock hit the power button...STROBE SOUND AGAIN!

I tried variations of the bottom plastic (I have 3 of them) and chassis (I
have 3 of them). Same strobe.

I'm totally baffled. All suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks!
